New Scientist has a short article about some of the rather bizarre names scientists have given to genes and so on, including the famous sonic hedgehog gene. They make a rather sensible argument about the important of consistency and clarity in scientific nomenclature, but I find that interesting and unusual names are more memorable (and make dull lectures a little more interesting!).
