Best Films of 2009
In no particular order (other than the obvious alphabetical) here are my favourite films from the past year (all links go to my own lame little reviews that I’ve posted previously):
(500) Days of Summer
A Serious Man
Avatar
Away We Go
The Brothers Bloom
Coraline
The Fantastic Mr Fox
Inglourious Basterds
Moon
Star Trek
Up
Watchmen
Where The Wild Things Are
I think that my...

Best Books of 2009
Having just finished my 60th book of the year, I’ve read more this year than last year (see this post), but still not as much as in the past. As with most years, while I have read a lot, it’s not usually ‘new’ books, which is to say books released in the current year. Therefore, in contrast to my Best Films of 2009 list, which features films released in 2009, this list post...

253 →
I just finished reading 253 by Geoff Ryman, which is a book with an interesting concept behind it. It’s not a novel as such but rather each page provides a short glimpse into the life of each of the 253 passengers on a London Underground train. This was originally published on the internet, and you can still read it for free online. However, it was later published in book form, which was how...

Free Music Online →
This article, along with the one linked to within it (here), gives some good links to sites that let you listen to and download music online, freely and legally. I’m in the mood for searching out some new bands to listen to, so I’ve been spending some time using these sites. In addition I’d also recommend 8tracks, which allows you to make and listen to mixes online (I plan to add...

What Are The Scariest Children's Films? →
This post brings up the interesting fact that a lot of children’s films are almost too scary for children, or at least, they may appear that way from an adult perspective. I’m not sure how I’d have felt about some of these as a child, and certainly don’t know enough children (thank god) to comment on others. Others were definitely a little creepy or scary when I was a kid....

Octopus Snatches Coconut and Runs →
This is incredibly cool: underwater video footage of an octopus picking up a coconut shell that has been dropped into the water and running away with it along the seafloor. Well worth watching, equal parts fascinating and hilarious.

A Follow Up Post on Movies and Piracy
A few days ago I posted something about movies and cinema attendance (see here). Following that I read this post on a similar topic, and thought I’d post my own thoughts in response. (I’m not simply reblogging it, because I’ve yet to figure out a way to format reblogged post that doesn’t annoy me!)
My original post had stated, to paraphrase, that I’d much rather go...

The Dark Tower Review
The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed…
I’ve now finished reading my way through The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. As I said when I first started this, I’d read the first four books before, but I was planning to read all seven books this time. I’ve finally finished them (total reading time: September 13th - November 29th) so I thought...
