Another book I’ve recently finished reading is John Scalzi’s latest novel Fuzzy Nation. The book is about a surveyor, Jack Holloway, on a planet that is being mined and exploited by ZaraCorp, your typical big evil corporation. Jack gets into trouble for letting his dog set off explosives, but it leads to a major discovery of rare and valuable gems. Later he discovers a some new alien creatures, which he calls fuzzys, who move into his cabin and start to show signs that they may be a previously undiscovered from of intelligent life. The book follows Jack’s battles with ZaraCorp as he tried to save the fuzzys without losing his new found riches in the process. It’s fast paced, entertaining and funny, but with one of the least likeable main characters I’ve encountered for a long time. He radiates smugness in such a way that not only made me want to punch him, but punch the whole book as well. So overall I had a bit of a mixed response to it! I guess I enjoyed it more than it annoyed me, but definitely not one of my favourite of Scalzi’s novels.
