I finally got a chance to see Super 8 at the cinema. I had been planning to go a few weeks back but couldn’t make it, then the cinema I usually go to stopped showing it, but eventually I went to see it at another cinema in town. I’m glad I made the effort because I really liked the movie.
The film is set in the late 70s and follows a group of kids who are making a super 8 movie. Filming late at night they capture a train derailment. The air force appear to start clearing up the wreck, but soon people start disappearing and the kids realise that something more is going on.
The movie was directed by JJ Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg and it very much has that feel to it; Cloverfield meets ET. That is not intended as a criticism however, because I thought it was a really good combination. I also liked that there was a bit of depth to it too, it wasn’t all just aliens and action sequences (although the aliens and action sequences were very well done).
Overall it was really good, the kids all gave great performances, the plot was good, a bit of a Spielberg cliché but totally not in a bad way, and great production values! As I said, I am glad that I got the chance to see it in the cinema, I think it was definitely worth the effort.
